How to import a Craig recording of your D&D session

If your table has recorded with Craig, those sessions can come into Daria whole — every player already on their own track, nothing to download and nothing to re-upload. It takes one paste, as long as the recording is still inside its seven days.

Daria records Discord sessions herself, so none of this is a prerequisite for using her. This page is about the evenings that happened before she arrived: a campaign you have been running for a year, a session from last month, anything a Craig link still points at.

Those are worth rescuing specifically because of how Craig records. It captures each person individually rather than as one room mix — one clean file per player, all on the same clock. A single mixed file of five people talking over each other is a wall of sound, and any tool working out who said what from it is guessing, worst of all in exactly the crowded scenes worth keeping. When every voice arrives on its own track there is nothing to guess at: who spoke is a fact about which file the words came from.

The catch is the clock. Craig deletes a recording seven days after you make it, so the back catalogue you can still import is only ever the last week of it — which is why this is worth doing the evening you think of it rather than the weekend after.

Importing a recording

Five steps, and only the first happens outside Daria. Have the Craig link to hand before you start.

  1. Find the link Craig sent youCraig sends a private message the moment a recording starts, not when it ends, containing a download link and a separate delete link. The download link is the one you want. If your table has recorded several times, each session has its own message. Check the date: past seven days Craig has deleted its own copy, and only files somebody downloaded at the time still exist.
  2. Open your campaign in Daria and choose to import a sessionImporting is a GM action, so Daria asks that you either hold Manage Server on the Discord server or be the campaign’s declared DM. Pick the Craig option rather than the audio or transcript one.Open Daria →
  3. Paste the linkDaria talks to Craig directly and collects the tracks herself, so there is nothing to download and nothing to upload — a four-hour session costs you one paste. She reads the session date and the list of players off the recording itself, so neither is something you have to type.
  4. Say who is whoDaria shows you the players Craig recorded and asks you to match each one to a character. This is the only manual step, it happens once per session, and it is what makes every later line attributable rather than guessed at.
  5. Leave it to runFrom here the session goes through the same pipeline as one Daria recorded herself: transcript, scenes, summaries, artwork, and every word searchable. A long session takes a while; you do not have to wait on the page.

Before you paste

Three things Daria checks, so they are worth knowing in advance.

Up to eight tracks.

That is the eight-channel ceiling of the audio format the session archive is stored in. Seven players and a DM fit. A larger table would need mixing down to a single audio file first — Daria takes that too and separates the voices herself, though a mixed file is guesswork where separate tracks are not.

A GM does the importing.

Daria asks for Manage Server on the Discord server, or that you are the campaign’s declared DM — the same bar as editing anything else about the campaign.

The session should be over.

Craig will hand over a recording that is still running, but you would be importing half an evening. Run /stop first, then import.

Why a Craig recording needs somewhere to go

Craig is a recorder, and a deliberately focused one. Three things it does not set out to do — and together they are the reason this page exists.

Seven days, and then it is gone.

Craig deletes a recording a week after you make it. That is a considered decision rather than an oversight — keeping every session of every table it records for, forever, is what would stop it being free. It does mean a session you want to keep has to be moved somewhere permanent before the week runs out. If somebody downloaded the files at the time, those can still be uploaded to Daria as audio instead.

Audio, not words.

What Craig hands back is sound files. There is no transcript, so the line somebody delivered perfectly two hours in is somewhere in four hours of audio, and finding it means listening for it.

Recording, and nothing after it.

No recaps, no summaries, no searchable history, no artwork — and Craig has never claimed otherwise. It captures the evening accurately and hands it to you; what the evening then becomes is left entirely up to you.

None of that is a criticism. Craig is free, it is dependable, and it produces the best raw material a Discord table can get — it hands you the tape, deliberately, and lets you decide what the tape is for. It is also the plainest argument for letting Daria record from here on: a session she captures is already where you want it, with no week to beat and nothing to move.

Questions about importing from Craig

Do I need Craig to use Daria?

No. Daria joins your voice channel and records it herself, so for the sessions you play from here on you do not need Craig at all. Craig is how the evenings you have already recorded get in — a share link still inside its seven days, from a table that was recording long before Daria arrived. She takes an audio file or a transcript you already have for the same reason. And if you would rather keep Craig as your recorder anyway, that works too; the import is the same either way.

My Craig link is more than seven days old. Can I still import it?

Not through the link — Craig will have deleted its copy by then. If somebody downloaded the files while they were still live, the session can still come in: Daria takes an audio upload too. If nobody did, that evening is gone, which is the best argument there is for letting Daria record the next one herself.

We have more than eight people in the voice channel. What happens?

Craig records everyone regardless. Daria imports up to eight tracks from one Craig recording, which is the channel ceiling of the format the session archive is stored in, so a larger table would need mixing down to a single audio file first — Daria takes that too, and separates the voices herself.

Do my players need to know they were recorded?

Yes, and ideally they already did — Craig appears in the member list while it records, and so does Daria, so it is visible rather than hidden. Before you import a back catalogue into something that will transcribe and summarise it, though, it is worth saying so out loud. It is their voices, and asking is much easier than un-importing.
